IPC-J-STD-001 Certified Application Specialist (CIS)
Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies





The J-STD-001 Certification Course consists of 5 modules. This course is a combination of lecture, written examinations and soldering and inspection labs. Students receive a full review and explanation of the entire contents of the IPC-J-STD-001 standard, providing a full understanding of process control requirements for soldering of electronics. Students will be required to assemble and solder acceptable workmanship samples. Workmanship grades will be based on acceptabile workmanship as well as inspection of their own work.

The J-STD-001 course is modular, allowing companies to choose the areas pertaining to their manufacturing needs. Each module takes 1 day. Module 1 is a prerequisite for all other modules; modules 2-5 are optional.

Upon successful completion, students will receive an IPC Certification, which is valid for 2 years.

Module Descriptions:

• Module 1: General Requirements (prerequisite for Modules 2-5)
• Module 2: Wires and Terminals
• Module 3: Through Hole
• Module 4: Surface Mount
• Module 5: Inspection (inspection lab only if student has successfully completed Modules 1-4)

Students are required to solder the following components:

Module 2 - Wires and Terminals
• Thermal and Mechanical Stripping
• Tinning of Wires Using Solder Pots and Soldering Irons
• Solderability Testing of Through-Hole Components
• Gold Cup
• Turret
• Bifurcated
• Pierced/Perforated/Lugs
• Hook






Module 3 - Through-hole
• ¼ Watt Axial Leaded Resistors
• Glass Body Diodes
• Radial Leaded Capacitor With Standoff
• Metal Cased Transistors With Standoff
• 16-Leaded DIP

  • 1206 Chip/Melf Components
  • 0805 Chip Resistors
  • 14-Leaded SOIC/Gull Wing
  • 20-Leaded J-Lead/PLCC
  • 100-Leaded Quad Flat Pack/Gull Wing
  • 0402 Chip Components
  • D-PAKs


IPC-J-STD-001 Certified Trainer (CIT)
Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies

This train-the-trainer course includes a full review of the J-STD-001 and workmanship soldering labs. At the conclusion of the course the student will take one open and one closed-book examination. Candidates who successfully complete the solder workmanship portions of the course and the examinations are given instructional materials needed for training J-STD-001 Application Specialists (CIS).

The term for certification is 2 years.
